We're going phone-free with Yondr!

"At Heartwood Learning Trust, we are committed to creating learning environments where every student can thrive. Our young people are growing up in an increasingly complex online and offline world which presents many exciting opportunities, but also educational, emotional and social challenges.

The week commencing 10th November 2025, we are going to launch the Yondr Phone-Free Schools Programme. This isn’t just about limiting screen time, it’s about giving students the space to think deeply, engage meaningfully, and thrive in an environment designed for their educational and personal growth."

Sparx Homework - Trust Learning Summary

"Recently launched in our secondary schools, both Sparx Maths and Sparx Science provide highly-personalised homework tasks tailored to each student’s attainment level and recent classwork. This will support students in developing deeper understanding, confidence, and independence in both subjects.

By progressing through each homework on their own, with the support from parents/carers and their teacher when needed, students will have the best opportunity to reach the goal of answering 100% of the questions correctly.

Each week, we will be sharing a summary of each school's results, including; completion rates, total learning hours and active students."

Skelton Primary School: National Poetry Day

"We celebrated National Poetry Day this week. This was a wonderful chance to enjoy the power of words, rhythm, and creativity! As part of our celebrations, children took part in a special assembly all about Benjamin Zephaniah, one of Britain’s most well-known and inspiring poets. Benjamin Zephaniah is famous for his energetic, thought-provoking poems that often tackle important themes like equality, justice, and peace. He grew up in Birmingham and left school at 13, but never stopped reading, writing, and believing in the power of poetry to make a difference. His poems are known for their strong rhythms, Jamaican influences, and spoken-word style — making them perfect to read aloud and perform! Some classes have already been inspired to write their own poems in his style, and we look forward to sharing some in future newsletters."

Barlby High School: Celebrating our students!

"A huge congratulations to our Year 11 football team, who secured an impressive 4–2 victory in their latest match. Not to be outdone, our Year 9 team also triumphed, with a fantastic 6–2 win. Well done to all players involved!

It's also been wonderful to hear about so many of our students getting involved in individual competitions, including tennis tournaments and creative writing challenges. We're especially proud of those who have entered the Young Writers competition with several of our talented writers now on their way to being published authors! What an incredible achievement and testament to the creativity and hard work of our students."

Menopause Awareness Month - October 2025

October is Menopause awareness month. A time dedicated to raising awareness about menopause and its impact. This is not just for those who are experiencing menopause symptoms but also for colleagues, line managers and family members.

Heartwood Learning Trust strives to create an atmosphere where menopause can be discussed, while at the same time respecting that for many people it is also part of their private life which they may not wish to discuss in a work context. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive working environment for all its workers and recognises that women may need additional consideration, support and adjustments before (perimenopause), during and after the menopause. For more information please see our Menopause Policy.

To support our commitment Menopause Cafes have been introduced across the Trust. These are an open, respectful and confidential space to promote discussion about menopause and/or perimenopause. They also provide an opportunity to expand your network of support. If you would like to attend a menopause cafe at your school, please email hr@hlt.academy.

If you have a member of staff or work colleague that is impacted by the menopause and would like guidance on how to support them please refer to the Menopause Policy or contact your HR Officer.

If you would like to know more about the menopause either for yourself or to support a colleague/family member, you may find the follow sites useful:
