Wellbeing in January

January can bring with it the idea of a fresh start, new plans, new resolutions and new energy.

This positivity can feel uplifting but there can also be a pressure to feel positive, motivated and ready for change straight away. For most of us, the reality is more mixed - and that is ok.

Wellbeing in January doesn't have to be about dramatic transformation. Often it is about the quieter wins. A single step forward is still progress. That might be setting an intention rather than a long list of goals.

This is especially important around “Blue Monday”. This term is commonly used across the media to describe the Third Monday of January, labelled as the most depressing day of the year.

Whether or not “Blue Monday” is a myth, if you are struggling with January and its expectations, there are steps you can take to counter this:

  • Maximise natural light and daylight exposure - can you take a walk outside during your lunch break?
  • Maintain social connection - Spend time with family, friends or colleagues
  • Focus on daily routines and self care - Can you do something for yourself today?
  • Stay physically active - A brisk walk, a class  or a gym session  can trigger the release of endorphins to uplift your mood.

Take control and reframe the narrative around Blue Monday and check in with yourself and others.
